“POV: You Realize That Halo 3 Was Released On This Day In 2007 (Sept 25th ’07)” runs across the top of the reel from @dylanlangille, over a bearded man in a gray T shirt staring off to one side with a stunned look. The caption sums up the reaction in a few words: “19 years. Wow. Booting up MCC tonight.”

The hashtags tell you where his head is: #halo3, #millennial, #xbox360 and #2007. The reel was posted on September 25, 2026, exactly nineteen years after the game’s launch day, and runs about sixteen seconds.

The joke is built from one visual effect, and the only text on screen is the opening line. For the first few seconds he looks the same, with dark hair and a dark beard, glancing off to the side. Around the four second mark his hair begins to lighten, and by about the six second mark it is mostly gray, with his face looking older while his expression stays stunned, eyebrows slightly raised and mouth a little open. He holds that look until roughly the ninth second. At the ten second mark a cover image of Halo 3 for the Xbox 360 appears over the lower part of his face and chest and stays on screen to the end of the clip, sliding slightly lower as it goes. Behind him is a room with warm lamps and a green garland along a shelf.

The launch he is counting from was a large one. According to Microsoft’s own announcement on September 26, 2007, Halo 3 took in an estimated $170 million in the United States in its first 24 hours. More than 1.7 million copies had been ordered ahead in the U.S. before stores opened at midnight on September 25, over 10,000 retailers held midnight events, and the game released in 37 countries and 17 languages. Microsoft also said more than a million Xbox LIVE members were online in the first 20 hours.

The same announcement says the figure beat the opening day records set by the film Spider-Man 3 and the novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and that the game was the fastest pre selling title in history, ahead of the record held by Halo 2. It also calls September 25 the most active gaming day in the history of Xbox LIVE, which then had more than 7 million users. Launch events were held in New York, Seattle, Miami and Los Angeles. Bungie Studios developed the game, which was exclusive to Xbox 360 and finished the original trilogy, with Master Chief and Cortana fighting the Covenant. A Microsoft Game Studios corporate vice president said in the release that the game had become “a pop culture phenomenon.”

The “MCC” in his caption is Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the bundle that brought the older games to newer hardware. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire announced that Halo 3 arrived in the collection on PC on July 14, 2020, through Xbox Game Pass for PC, the Microsoft Store and Steam, with 11 campaign missions, 24 multiplayer maps and native mouse and keyboard controls.

For anyone taking the same trip back, the 2020 post lists what the PC version offers: play at up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second or higher, adjustable field of view, ultrawide support, rebindable controls, Spartan customization, the Forge map editor and Theater mode. On Steam and the Microsoft Store, the post gave the full Master Chief Collection bundle a price of $39.99 and Halo 3 on its own $9.99 at launch, so prices today may differ.
