A 27-year-old woman living in Japan is considering kicking her cousin out of her home after hosting him and another cousin for two months. The cousins, aged 22 and 24, came to visit her from the U.S. during the summer, and while the stay initially seemed manageable, issues quickly escalated.

The woman had set ground rules before their arrival, including expectations around groceries, utilities, and general respect in her home. While the younger cousin has been helpful and respectful, the older cousin’s behavior has been less than ideal. According to her account, he has opted to ignore basic household etiquette, refusing to take off his shoes at the door, leaving dishes unwashed, and even neglecting his laundry.

Things took a turn for the worse when the older cousin openly expressed his disdain for cultural norms and demonstrated racist attitudes. He reportedly made derogatory comments about food from different cultures and even used offensive language while in her presence. His behavior has made her feel uncomfortable and unsafe in her own home.

The woman mentioned that upon returning home from work, she often found her kitchen in disarray, with no clean dishes available for cooking. She also raised concerns about his lack of consideration for her allergies, as he only bought beef, which she cannot eat. The unpleasant odor from the meat drippings has further contributed to her frustration.

During an outing to a local museum, the older cousin’s behavior became more alarming when he carelessly flicked his shoes off without regard for the space. She confronted him about acting his age, to which he responded with anger, asserting that he was not her student and accused her of being too bossy.

With three weeks left of their planned stay, she found herself at a crossroads. She began to consider the consequences of kicking him out, fearing it might damage her relationships with the rest of her family. In discussions with her father, he expressed support for her potential decision and encouraged her to set boundaries, suggesting that her cousin simply needed “a little discipline.”

As the situation neared its breaking point, she felt compelled to issue an ultimatum to her older cousin. Her father’s backing made her feel more resolved about the potential consequences of her actions. However, she still struggled with the moral implications of leaving him stranded in a foreign country.

Echoing her concerns were thoughts about the cultural and familial dynamics at play. One reader suggested that it’s essential to consider the impact on her relationship with the younger cousin, who has been a good guest during their stay. Others emphasized that her wellbeing should take precedence. The notion of hospitality was brought into question, especially when it crosses into tolerating disrespect and harmful attitudes.

As she grapples with her decision, the woman is weighed down by familial loyalty against the need for self-respect and a safe living environment. The future of her relationship with her relatives looms in the background as she contemplates the next steps. Should she maintain her hospitality despite the disrespect, or implement necessary boundaries to safeguard her peace of mind?
