A teenager in the U.S. recently shared how her first job turned into a source of conflict with her mother, who now expects her to contribute financially in ways she never anticipated. After starting work just a few months ago, the girl found herself navigating a complicated dynamic that tested her boundaries and financial independence.

Initially, the teen earned around $40 a week. She was only required to contribute a small amount for gas money, which was manageable. However, as her hours increased during the summer, her earnings surged to between $150 and $200 each week, prompting her mother to make increasingly demanding requests for money.
The mother started asking her daughter to buy new shoes, clothes, and various household items. When the teen refused, her mother responded with verbal attacks, labeling her as selfish and ungrateful. The mother also claimed that her daughter owed her for years of support and care, pushing the emotional pressure further.
In an attempt to gain clarity, the young woman reached out to her father, who lives several hours away. He reassured her that she was not in the wrong and that it was not her responsibility to fund her mother’s lifestyle. Despite this support, the situation deteriorated quickly. The mother retaliated by cutting off financial assistance, stating that if her daughter would not help her, then she would not help her daughter either.
This ultimatum meant the teenager had to buy all her school supplies, clothes, and even hygiene products on her own. With the rising costs of essentials, it became increasingly difficult for her to manage her finances. She was still providing gas money to her mother, which added to her financial strain.
The conflict worsened when her work hours were cut, drastically reducing her income. Despite her diminished earnings, her mother continued to pressure her for money and demanded that she contribute to household expenses, insisting that she owed her. The mother’s mood swings, often turning from calm to angry over money issues, made the living situation tense and unpredictable.
As the teen grapples with the demands placed on her, she feels trapped. While some online commenters expressed outrage at the mother’s behavior, others offered practical advice—encouraging her to maintain boundaries and prioritize her well-being. One person told her she deserved to save and spend her earnings as she saw fit, emphasizing that parental support should not come with strings attached.
Another reader suggested she document any financial interactions and communications to protect herself. They pointed out that establishing clear boundaries now could help her in the future, especially as she approaches adulthood. The young woman acknowledged this advice but felt stuck in her current living situation and responsibilities.
She explained that moving in with her father was not an option due to a lack of space and other personal reasons. Moreover, she valued her academic standing and didn’t want to disrupt her education by switching schools. Emancipation wasn’t viable either, as her mother didn’t physically abuse her, even though her actions felt emotionally manipulative.
In a recent update, the teen reached out to her father again. She requested some financial help to buy the remaining school supplies she needed. While he agreed to send the money, he was non-committal regarding further discussions about her mother’s behavior, leaving her feeling uncertain about any changes ahead.
As the young woman navigates this tumultuous relationship with her mother, her independence is put to the test. She finds herself caught between fulfilling her mother’s demands and establishing her own financial autonomy in a challenging situation. With her eighteenth birthday approaching, she holds on to hope that life will improve once she can fully support herself.
