A 22-year-old man is facing a heart-wrenching decision about whether to keep his name on the lease for his mother’s home, filled with piles of clutter and neglect. His mother, a 61-year-old woman suffering from severe mental health issues, has been a hoarder for as long as he can remember, and the situation in her home has deteriorated significantly.

He recently visited her house, which he left at age 16 and where he grew up. The once cluttered space has now become a health hazard, likely classified as “level 4 or 5” on the hoarding scale. His mother has been unable to manage her belongings, and the place is teeming with problems. Water damage from a flooding incident, a mouse infestation, and rotting food litter the home. The sights and smells overwhelmed him as he realized the extent of the neglect.

Growing up, he maintained a rocky relationship with his mother but has since developed a bond with her, appreciating her humor and kindness. Despite their struggles, he has enjoyed visiting her in his own apartment, avoiding the chaos of her house. Nevertheless, he feels an enormous sense of responsibility as she has no other family to turn to. His mother relies solely on disability income, and he knows her situation is precarious.

Last week, he received a notice from their landlord, prompting a sense of urgency. If he removes his name from the lease, she risks being evicted from the home where she feels secure. His mother has already missed medical appointments crucial for her health, including follow-ups for past cancer treatments and a heart attack. Her mental health is in decline, and she struggles with PTSD and agoraphobia.

The son is torn between being the safety net his mother desperately needs and protecting his own future. He is about to embark on a journey into medical school, a dream that could soon ensure a brighter future for himself. But his mother’s deteriorating living conditions haunt him. He is aware that remaining on the lease ties him to her hoarding situation, potentially leading to legal ramifications and emotional burnout.

Despite her promise to attempt cleaning the house, he found little evidence of progress during his recent visit. She insisted on keeping things like a pile of moldy wood that she hoped to turn into a balcony for a dilapidated dollhouse. The condition of the house had worsened since he last saw it, and every step he took inside felt like stepping further into a tangled web of despair.

While he feels guilty for even contemplating leaving her behind, he understands that he cannot sacrifice his own mental health. He is increasingly recognizing that endless cycles of cleaning, which he initially hoped for, may never amount to much. He even found a refrigerator filled with thousands of dead fruit flies—an alarming signal of just how far gone things truly are. He fantasizes about hiring a cleaning service or finding a dumpster to clear the mess, but knows deep down, he cannot shoulder this burden alone.

This internal conflict leaves him feeling trapped. He has diligently managed to maintain his own life and success while caring for her, but the weight of her situation is overwhelming. He worries that by detaching himself from her lease, he may be pushing her into homelessness, forcing a move that would rip her away from the community she holds dear.

He has decided to take steps to aid her indirectly. He plans to help her set up essential services like internet and a phone, as well as schedule necessary medical appointments. He’s also looking into local support groups specifically for hoarders, acknowledging that she may need assistance beyond what he can provide alone. However, he feels the stark reality that he cannot carry her burdens indefinitely.

As he prepares to sign off the lease, he grapples with conflicting emotions. He wants to honor the love and care they have for each other but fears that enabling her to stay may just prolong the inevitable. As he moves forward, he hopes that by stepping back, it might allow her some independence. Yet he cannot shake the feeling that he is abandoning her despite trying to offer support in other ways.

He continues to seek advice from others in similar situations, yearning for reassurance that he is making the right choice. With a background in dealing with hoarding issues and mental health complexities, he wonders if seeking professional help for his mother might be the only pathway forward. The shadow of a hard decision looms over him as he weighs his options for both their futures.
