Rubik’s Cube Has Sold Over 450 Million Units Ever Since an Architecture Professor Accidentally Invented It

Ernő Rubik wasn’t trying to invent a toy in the spring of 1974. He was a design and architecture instructor in Budapest trying to build a teaching model that could show his students how independent parts move without the whole structure falling apart, and he built it out of wood, rubber bands, and paperclips before he had any plan to sell it. It took him roughly a month to solve his own invention the first time. Fifty-plus years and more than 450 million units later, that failed classroom prop is the best-selling toy in history.

A Structural Problem, Not a Puzzle

Rubik studied sculpture, design, and architecture in Budapest, and by the early 1970s he was teaching design at the city’s Academy of Applied Arts and Crafts, according to the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center, which chronicles the invention story of the Rubik’s Cube in its own archives. The question he was chasing had nothing to do with games — he wanted a physical model that let each of 26 small blocks move independently around a central axis without the entire cube falling apart in his hands. He carved the original prototype from wood, about three inches to a side, and held the mechanism together with elastic bands rather than the interlocking core that later versions used.

Only after he’d built the thing did Rubik realize what he’d actually made: scramble the faces, and putting the colors back in order turned out to be a genuinely difficult problem, even for the man who designed it. Smithsonian Magazine’s history of the cube notes it took Rubik about a month of trial and error to solve his own scrambled prototype for the first time — a fact that says a great deal about how the puzzle would go on to frustrate several hundred million other people. He called his creation the Bűvös Kocka, Hungarian for “Magic Cube,” and filed for a Hungarian patent in 1975, where the patent office officially classified it as a “spatial logic toy.”

From a Budapest Classroom to a Global Fad

The Magic Cube reached Hungarian toy shelves in 1977, manufactured in small runs by a state-run company because Hungary’s Communist-era economy made mass production difficult and export next to impossible. It stayed a regional curiosity for two years until it caught the eye of Tom Kremer, a Hungarian-born toy licensor, at the 1979 Nuremberg Toy Fair. Kremer brought it to the Ideal Toy Company in the United States, which renamed it the Rubik’s Cube and launched it worldwide in 1980. Within two years it had sold roughly 100 million units, and it was showing up in American TV commercials and its own Saturday-morning cartoon by the early 1980s.

450 Million and Counting

The cube’s staying power outlasted the 1980s fad it started as. In 2020, the toy company Spin Master — best known today for reviving brands like Etch A Sketch — acquired the Rubik’s brand outright, and at the time of that deal, Forbes reported cumulative worldwide sales of roughly 450 million units since the cube’s 1980 launch, with tens of millions more selling every year since. That figure puts it well ahead of other perennial toy-aisle staples, and it’s a number that keeps climbing: competitive speedcubing is now an organized sport with its own world championships, where top solvers finish a scrambled cube in well under five seconds. The puzzle’s underlying math is part of why it never got boring — a standard 3×3 cube has more than 43 quintillion possible configurations from a single starting point, a number so large that mathematicians and computer scientists spent over three decades working out the minimum number of moves needed to solve any scramble, a research project that finally proved the answer was 20 moves in 2010, a figure now nicknamed “God’s Number.”

What Survived the Fad

Most 1980s toy crazes burn out once the novelty wears off; the Rubik’s Cube is one of the rare ones that turned into infrastructure instead — a puzzle so structurally sound that it outlived the company that first licensed it, the Cold War economy that first produced it, and every knockoff cube that tried to improve on it. Rubik built a teaching tool and accidentally built the toy industry’s longest-running proof that a genuinely good structural idea doesn’t need marketing to survive — it just needs eight corners, twelve edges, and a few hundred million people determined to solve it.
