A 20-year-old man has opened up about his troubling upbringing in a religious mega-family, detailing how he escaped what he describes as a cycle of parental neglect and overwhelming responsibility. Initially, he did not see a way out, but now he is declaring independence as his parents attempt to draw him back home.

The man, who recently shared his story on Reddit, explained that his parents, both 38, have consistently chosen to have more children despite the challenges. He is the oldest of several siblings and has shouldered much of the parenting burden since he was a child. His father worked outside the home while his mother, who has never held a job, focused on child-rearing. As a result, he became the de facto caretaker for his younger siblings, a dynamic that he says has bred resentment and distance within the family.

Growing up in a strictly religious household, he was taught that birth control was off-limits and that having a large family was a virtue. Despite the physical and emotional toll this lifestyle took on his mother, the family followed religious tenets that did not allow for questioning these beliefs. The man noted that even medical risks associated with pregnancy did not deter his parents from continuing to have children.

When he turned 18, he distanced himself from the church and the family structure he had known. He stated that he never truly bought into the teachings that governed his childhood. After a difficult experience where he felt his educational prospects were compromised due to his obligations, he moved out soon after high school. The considerable responsibilities laid upon him led to poor academic performance and a lack of support from his parents.

Now that he has left, his parents have begun to press for his return, especially with news that his mother is pregnant again. The urge to pull him back into the family fold appears to be driven by their need for help managing their large family. His father has reached out, claiming that the family needs him to keep things running smoothly. This call for help has also been echoed by his younger siblings, who remember him as the one who took care of them.

However, the eldest son is resolute in his decision to stay away. He underscored that he does not wish to fall back into the role of caretaker, a responsibility he feels has stifled his growth and autonomy. “I don’t even want a relationship with any of my family,” he shared, expressing how the pressure to assist has taken a toll on him emotionally.

Despite feeling guilty for turning his back on his family, he has emphasized the necessity of prioritizing his own well-being. He is contemplating relocating to another town to fully break away from his family’s demands. The idea of slipping back into that cycle frightens him, especially since he had to abandon his education to meet the needs of his parents and siblings.

One person told him, “You deserve to live your own life, free of those burdens.” Another reader pointed out that it’s not his responsibility to support a family that has not nurtured him. The responses highlighted a mix of support and understanding from others who have read his story. Many advised him to remain firm in his boundaries, suggesting that he seek out new connections that can provide the support he lacked in his childhood.

As he weighs his next steps, the young man is left at a crossroads. He wants to establish himself without feeling the weight of familial obligations dragging him back. With his parents’ increasing attempts to rekindle that relationship, he remains unsure whether to confront his past again or to fully commit to his new life.
