A 19-year-old woman has chosen to cut ties with her mother after enduring a lifetime of emotional neglect and harsh treatment. The young woman, who has shared her story online, described a childhood overshadowed by her mother’s favoritism towards her half-sister, leaving her feeling unloved and unworthy.

The daughter, who goes by the handle “u/Tim’s Spawn,” recalls her mother’s constant derogatory remarks about her biological father, Tim. Since she was a child, her mom has referred to her as “Tim’s spawn,” belittling her for something she had no control over. She never met Tim, yet her mother painted him as a villain, even asserting that her daughter resembled him in the worst ways.

As a child, the young woman attempted to forge a bond through gestures of love, creating handmade cards for special occasions. But rather than appreciating these efforts, her mother dismissed them harshly. “I remember making her cards and drawings for her Christmas, Mother’s Day, and her birthday during art class,” she said. “She would always say mean things like I made them look ugly or I made her look like a monster.”

The situation worsened when her mother met Mark, who became her half-sister’s father. The young woman was just seven at the time. From then on, her mother’s demeanor shifted, showering her half-sister with love and affection while continuing to make the daughter feel like an unwanted burden. “The mom she has been to her from day one is so different from the mom she ever was to me,” the daughter lamented.

As she grew older, the daughter became acutely aware of the stark contrast in treatment between her and her half-sister. Her mother openly resented her, often conveying to others that she was pawned off to relatives as a child. This consistent pattern of neglect and emotional abuse fueled a deep-seated resentment within her. “If I wanted her to see me as worth her time, I should have been like my half-sister,” she reflected.

The relationship deteriorated further when her mother began demanding that she babysit her half-sister. When the daughter refused, she faced fierce backlash. Her mother would berate her, accusing her of being nasty and unloving. Mark often added to the turmoil, blaming her for their decision not to marry. Such conflicts left her feeling trapped and unloved.

Eventually, the situation became untenable. At 15, she made the decision to distance herself from her family. Moving out at 18 marked a turning point, leading her to go no contact with her mother. “She started wanting me to babysit… I told her I didn’t care about her baby and I wanted nothing to do with her,” she explained. This was the final straw for her mother, who reacted with anger and resentment.

Since the young woman made her decision, her mother has reportedly harassed not only her family members but also her friends’ parents in an attempt to force a reconciliation. The daughter has received messages urging her to speak to her mother, who characterized her as a “brat” for withholding contact.

The young woman has shared her story online, seeking advice about whether to maintain no contact or attempt to talk with her mother again. Many who read her post responded with strong support for her decision to stay away. One person told her, “Your mental health is worth more than their guilt trips.” Another reader concurred, emphasizing that a toxic relationship is not worth rekindling.

Her mother’s actions have raised significant concerns, especially regarding why an emotionally abusive parent seeks to re-establish contact after years of harmful treatment. The daughter has expressed skepticism about the potential for any positive change, asserting, “She doesn’t bring anything good into my life.”

This young woman stands at a crossroads, contemplating whether to re-engage with a mother who has consistently undermined her sense of self-worth. The emotional scars run deep, and trust has long since been broken. As she weighs her options, the question remains: can a relationship with a mother who has shown such favoritism and cruelty be repaired, or is it better left in the past?
