A newlywed woman has taken to social media to share her struggle with her husband’s nightly TV-watching habit, which she says is affecting her health and sleep. The 23-year-old wife, known on Reddit as u/tvprobs, married her husband three months ago, and she claims he insists on sleeping with the television blaring every night.

In her original post, she described persistent back pain that had been troubling her for months. After visiting multiple doctors and a chiropractor, she was advised that her back was structurally fine, though the pain persisted. Upon further reflection, she connected her discomfort to her sleeping arrangements with her husband, who refuses to turn off the TV at night.

“I can technically sleep with the TV on, I just prefer not to,” she explained. However, the bright light from the screen and the noise made it difficult for her to get a restful night’s sleep. In a moment of desperation for relief, she asked her husband to turn off the TV one night. When he refused, she opted to sleep on the couch instead and found it to be the best night’s sleep she had experienced in ages.

After waking refreshed, she suggested to her husband that they try sleeping without the TV for one week. Surprisingly, he agreed under the stipulation that it was a temporary change. That week turned out to be transformative for her, as she found herself able to sleep on her back—something she had struggled to do while sharing the bed with the glowing screen.

Despite the success of their experiment, the moment the week ended, her husband reverted to his old habits. He turned on the TV again, insisting that he couldn’t sleep without it. The wife was left feeling frustrated and at a crossroads. She had demonstrated her need for a quieter sleeping environment but found her husband unwilling to compromise.

She sought advice from the Reddit community, sharing that she had presented numerous articles about the negative effects of sleeping with the TV on, to no avail. “I obviously can’t sleep on the couch every night,” she lamented, noting the challenge of finding a resolution that would satisfy both of them.

Readers responded with various suggestions, urging the couple to explore alternatives that could satisfy both partners’ preferences. One person asked, “What does he like about having the TV on? The light? The noise?” This prompted her to confirm her husband relied on both the visual and auditory stimulation to fall asleep, although he usually watched shows like “John Oliver” and “Family Guy.”

Another reader suggested that if he needed noise and light to sleep, they could experiment with low-light solutions or a white noise machine instead. However, the wife pointed out that her husband was skeptical about anything but the TV.”

A few days later, she returned to update the community on their progress. After reading through the supportive comments, she decided to have a serious talk with her husband. The conversation took a productive turn; her husband apologized, admitting he hadn’t understood how serious her discomfort was. They brainstormed multiple solutions, ultimately agreeing on a compromise.

Now, they watch a movie together on the couch before bed. Once her husband falls asleep, she nudges him to go to the bedroom, where they can rest in silence. The strategy seems to be working well, and she mentioned they have both been sleeping better as a result.

Despite the resolution, the wife acknowledged that they might need to explore additional options in the future, like earplugs or sleep masks, to ensure they both continue to get the sleep they need. This story highlights the sometimes-complicated negotiations that come with sharing a living space, especially in marriage.

One reader reacted positively to the couple’s newfound understanding, noting how communication was key to resolving their issues. “It’s great to see that you both found a solution that works for you,” they said.

As the couple continues to navigate their sleeping arrangements, the wife is hopeful that with patience and communication, they can maintain this harmony in their home. “Thank you again for all your wonderful suggestions!” she wrote.
