A manager at an American company overseas has shared an alarming account of a chaotic workplace scenario involving an employee who appears to be misappropriating queer identity. What began as a simple suggestion to join an LGBTQ+ employee resource group turned into a year-long saga that revealed deeper issues within the workplace.

The manager, who has opted to remain anonymous, described Pam, a mid-career but entry-level employee who initially joined the LGBTQ+ group as a straight ally. However, within a short span, Pam began presenting herself as gay, bisexual, or queer to the group members, raising suspicions among her colleagues.
The manager became increasingly concerned about Pam’s motivations for becoming the group lead, especially considering her history of ambition and questionable ethics. Pam had a habit of seeking excessive attention and stirring drama in the office. She would frequently contact busy executives, often about non-work-related matters, creating unnecessary crises for attention.
Her behavior extended beyond mere workplace disruption. The manager noted that Pam had created an unsettling atmosphere within the LGBTQ+ group, even sharing personal details about her life that left others feeling uncomfortable. Pam’s actions did not align with the values of the group, and her sudden shift to identifying as queer raised red flags.
As time went on, the situation deteriorated further. Pam’s leadership resulted in chaos, culminating in the departure of several group members. One employee, Mary, accused Pam of manipulative behavior that led to significant personal and professional harm. Pam promised to leave her husband and move in with Mary, only to later turn on her once Mary had complied with all her demands.
The fallout from Pam’s actions left many in the group feeling betrayed and confused. Although Mary’s situation was handled with care by the company, the damage was already done. The manager recounted the distress caused to Mary, who lost her job due to Pam’s complaints about being outed.
Amidst the turmoil, the manager was filled with unease about Pam’s behavior and how it influenced the group. Despite strong labor protections making termination difficult, the manager had serious reservations about Pam’s ability to represent any employee group, fearing for the wellbeing of those involved.
As the months passed, the situation escalated. Pam ended up on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP), resisting accountability and continuing to spread chaos in the office. The new manager, Junie, faced significant stress managing Pam, who had become a source of considerable disruption.
After nearly a year of turmoil, things began to shift when the original manager decided to intervene more actively. They advised Junie about the risks of keeping Pam in the office, highlighting how her presence affected team morale and productivity. The manager also reached out to upper management to ensure awareness of Mary’s situation and prevent recurrence of such issues.
A breakthrough occurred during these discussions. The director of a high school hiring program, who had previously overlooked the emotional needs of young employees, expressed deep regret about failing Mary. He moved quickly to make amends, which included helping to retroactively change Mary’s termination status and assisting her in a successful legal action against Pam for romance fraud.
Mary’s resilience in the face of adversity was inspiring, with her situation improving dramatically after she received support from both her former colleagues and external sources. As the company strengthened its connections with local LGBTQ+ groups and youth chambers, the atmosphere shifted positively, emphasizing community and support.
Eventually, Pam’s disruptive behavior reached a breaking point. Her PIP extended, and her continued attempts to manipulate the situation backfired. After she filed numerous false complaints about her health and well-being, the company offered her a severance package to encourage her departure. To everyone’s surprise, she accepted and left her position abruptly.
As Pam moves on, the original manager is left reflecting on the aftermath, relieved to see the group begin to recover and the positive changes taking place within the company. Meanwhile, a sense of caution lingers whenever hiring new team members, as they ponder how to avoid future incidents involving manipulative individuals.
