The lifeguard, a 21-year-old woman, was minding her duties during a swim lesson at the facility when she noticed a decrease in the number of people at the pool. As she took a moment to scan the area, she playfully stuck her tongue out at a few children, a habit of hers. However, her playful moment quickly turned uncomfortable when an older man, identified as an entitled father, whistled loudly to get her attention.

When she turned to face him, he made an inappropriate comment about her outfit, saying, “Damn, don’t be dressing like that in front of the boys! They might get ideas.” The comment, directed at her while she was performing her job, left her feeling uncomfortable and confused. The man, approximately 40 to 50 years old, seemed to be oblivious to the fact that the oldest child present was only eight years old.

Trying to defuse the situation, the lifeguard responded, “Excuse me?” But rather than backing down, the man pressed on, making crude remarks about her appearance and referencing her uniform. Despite attempts to redirect the conversation and remind him that swim instructors were dressed similarly, the entitled father continued to make advances, asking her for her phone number. When she politely declined, citing her job’s rules against personal interactions with patrons, he told her not to be “difficult.”

As tensions rose, he moved closer, cornering her at the edge of the pool. The atmosphere shifted from merely uncomfortable to threatening as he demanded, “What’s the real reason you don’t want my number?” She maintained her composure, responding that she had a girlfriend and wasn’t interested. However, this only seemed to inflame the situation further, prompting him to make an aggressive move. He attempted to grab her rescue tube, yanking her towards him.

Fortunately, she held tightly onto the tube, causing the man to stumble forward and ultimately topple into the shallow end of the pool. In a moment of unexpected justice, his shirt puffed up like a muffin as he landed in the water. The lifeguard noted later that it was a rather hilarious sight; the water was shallow, so he was not in any danger. However, protocol required her to jump in after him and ensure his safety.

As she assisted him out of the water, the entitled father unleashed a barrage of insults, calling her derogatory names and making hurtful comments. He even threatened to never return to the facility and insisted that his son would stop attending swim lessons due to her behavior. Amidst the chaos, another lifeguard and swim instructor intervened, separating her from the angry patron.

In the aftermath, the lifeguard was instructed to file a report about the incident. Although the process took hours and was frustrating for her, she felt it was important to document what had happened. Meanwhile, the man’s wife, who arrived shortly after to pick up their son, approached the lifeguard to apologize for her husband’s behavior. She shared that this was not the first time he had exhibited such inappropriate behavior and that she was considering divorce, relieved to be moving on from the toxic relationship.

As the lifeguard reflected on the situation, she expressed her hope that people in the service industry would be treated with respect and acknowledged as individuals rather than objects of desire. She pointed out how common harassment is in their line of work, something that needs to be addressed and reduced.

The entire experience left her shaken but also somewhat relieved that the incident had ended without physical harm. Still, she couldn’t shake the feeling of frustration over having to deal with such inappropriate behavior while simply trying to do her job.
