An international student from El Salvador is turning to crowdfunding to secure tuition for his upcoming semester at a college in Canada. He claims that various challenges have left him feeling abandoned and overwhelmed in what he expected to be a welcoming environment.
The student, who arrived in Canada with a significant loan and little more than the clothes on his back, has documented a litany of difficulties he faced upon arrival. Hoping for a fresh start, he instead experienced a host of setbacks that he feels have thwarted his dreams of a better life.
Upon his arrival, the student anticipated a warm welcome but was met with what he described as a cold reality. He cites the need to navigate a complex bureaucracy as one of his first hurdles. “I had to go to another building,” he explained, lamenting the inconvenience in the harsh cold.
The struggles continued when he attempted to purchase winter clothing. He relied on a taxi to take him to Walmart, only to report being overcharged—a claim he attributes to the driver’s actions. This series of events left him frustrated and feeling exploited.
Housing proved to be another significant challenge; he reported moving three times in just one year. While he did not elaborate on the reasons for these frequent relocations, it raised eyebrows regarding his ability to find stable living conditions.
As he tried to acclimate to his new life, he suffered physical injuries, including a broken ankle from falling on ice—not a rare occurrence in Canadian winters. His attempts to find part-time work as a student were met with repeated failures, forcing him to dip into his student loan funds for basic living expenses.
The situation worsened when he encountered issues with Canada’s healthcare system that reportedly led to an embolism. He shared that he felt mistreated and discriminated against on multiple occasions, which compounded his struggles and heightened his sense of isolation.
The lack of sufficient financial resources has pushed him to rely on food banks, leading to further dissatisfaction with his living conditions. He expressed frustration that the limited options provided by food banks did not help him with his weight loss goals, leaving him feeling physically unwell.
Describing his situation, he stated that if he cannot raise enough funds, he will be forced to return to El Salvador with what he calls “crippling debt” and the burden of depression. His appeal for financial support includes a request for $9,000 for this semester alone, with plans for additional funding needs in the future.
Despite the heavy burdens he carries, he remained optimistic, stating, “I am meant for something bigger.” He believes that by continuing his education in Canada, he can fulfill his potential and make a difference.
In his pleas for help, he emphasized the importance of respect in communication, urging his audience to be kind, especially when offering criticism. He indicates he is willing to engage respectfully with those who have genuine questions or concerns about his situation.
