A woman has found herself managing the chaos of a new dog, despite her husband’s promise that he would not add to her worries. Married for 12 years and the mother of two boys, she’s facing a familiar struggle as the responsibilities of pet care have fallen squarely on her shoulders.

The couple had one dog, an American Bully, who had been a beloved part of their family. He had lived with them since their marriage and became especially cherished after their children were born. While he was good with the kids, he also had his quirks, including a penchant for eating their toys and clothes. When the dog began to show signs of aging, her husband suggested getting a new dog to liven things up. She was initially opposed, especially since they were also adjusting to their youngest child being just a month old.

Her husband persisted, eventually bringing home a new puppy without fully discussing it with her first. She felt conflicted; the puppy was adorable, and the kids were excited, but she worried about how it would impact their elderly dog. Despite voicing her concerns, they acquired the puppy. She agreed, laying out clear boundaries that the new addition would not become another task for her to manage.

Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. Their first dog, who had been part of their lives for so long, struggled to adapt to the new arrival. He was soon put down, leaving the family in mourning. The new puppy, now eight months old, lacked proper training and quickly became a source of frustration. He chewed on toys, jumped on the children, and even nipped at their hands, demonstrating that he needed more discipline than he was receiving.

Despite her persistent requests for training and support, her husband dismissed her concerns, saying that the dog behaved differently around him. This dismissive attitude only compounded her frustration. The new dog was crated often because he couldn’t be trusted around the children, adding to the chaos in her already busy household.

She has taken on managing the puppy’s vet appointments, vaccines, and insurance, along with ensuring he gets his regular medications. Each task felt like a burden added to her already full plate. The ripple effects of the new dog’s behavior meant much of her time went to managing the situation rather than enjoying their new family member.

Her husband’s promises about the new dog not being her problem felt hollow as the responsibilities mounted. She had made her boundaries clear, but they were being ignored, and she felt increasingly overwhelmed. “Am I overreacting? Am I the drama?” she asked, seeking validation as she navigated the complexities of family life and pet ownership.

One person suggested that her husband should shoulder more of the responsibility, as he was the one who brought the puppy home. “It’s unfair for you to carry the burden alone,” they said. Another reader emphasized that promises made should be kept, especially when it concerns shared responsibilities in a family.

As she reflects on her situation, she wonders if she should push for more equality in their roles as pet owners or accept that this is her new reality. She feels frustrated and alone in managing not just the dog but the household too. The sense of being a single parent to both the children and now the puppy has taken a toll.

She continues to weigh her options. While she loves her family and even the new dog, the imbalance in household duties has left her feeling drained. There’s no easy answer to her mounting frustrations, and the journey ahead seems daunting.
