Public property records tell the fuller story of how often the house has traded hands since it stood in for the McCallister home in the 1990 film. John and Cynthia Abendshien, who lived in the house during filming and owned it since 1988, sold it in March 2012 for just under $1.6 million, according to CBS News Chicago’s coverage of that sale. Cook County transaction records reviewed via BlockShopper’s property database show the home then passed to Timothy and Trisha Johnson in December 2016, and finally to a buyer entity named Mikallister LLC — a nod to the film’s fictional family — for $5.5 million in January 2025.

The Johnsons made the house worth far more than the Abendshiens ever saw. Their 2018 renovation nearly doubled the property’s square footage to more than 9,000 square feet, adding an indoor sports court, a home theater and a modern family room while preserving the grand foyer and staircase familiar from the film, according to Patch’s report. The final sale price worked out to more than $600 per square foot.

Culkin, who played Kevin McCallister and turned 46 this year, has had little to do with the house’s real-world fortunes since filming wrapped — he’s never owned it. But three sales and a renovation later, the “Home Alone” house has appreciated from under $1.6 million to $5.5 million, more than tripling in value over roughly thirteen years even as it stayed one of what CNBC calls “one of the most Googled houses in the world.”
