A 20-year-old university student has shared her painful backstory on Reddit, detailing her abusive relationship with her mother who recently moved to her university city, further complicating their already fraught connection. The daughter, who has struggled with her mental health, described a tumultuous upbringing marked by psychological abuse and neglect.

After years of living with her mother’s expectations, she chose to attend university far from home, hoping to escape the toxic dynamic. But soon after she began her studies, her mother moved to the same city, claiming it was for her daughter’s convenience during the holidays. This move intensified their conflicts, as the daughter felt it stifled her independence.

Financial strain has also been a significant issue. After the daughter chose a major outside of medicine—an area her mother had hoped she would pursue—her mother announced that she would cut off funding for her education. Forced to work part-time to support herself, the daughter is now applying for student loans to continue her studies.

The situation worsened when her mother decided to relocate to a nearby town, a place that makes it much harder for her daughter to access the university campus. The change has dramatically reduced her social life, a blow to her already fragile mental health. The mother continues to call her daughter “selfish” for wanting to stay in her current university city, positioning her need for space as a personal affront.

As the daughter reflected on her childhood, she recalled the expensive gifts and vacations her mother provided. While these things initially seemed like blessings, they now feel like chains. “It almost feels transactional,” she admitted, struggling with feelings of guilt over contemplating cutting her mother out of her life.

The mother has often belittled her daughter’s attempts to express how the past has impacted her. During heated arguments, the daughter feels forced into a corner, labeled as rude or dramatic whenever she tries to articulate her feelings. The psychological scars from her upbringing have manifested in anxiety and unhealthy coping mechanisms, including self-harm.

While the daughter recognizes her own faults in these conflicts, she feels trapped in a cycle of heightened emotions that only occurs with her mother. “I don’t react this way with anyone else,” she explained, emphasizing the unique strain their relationship places on her mental health.

After sharing her story online, numerous readers responded with empathy and support. One reader pointed out, “You deserve to thrive, not just survive, and it’s okay to seek space from toxicity.” Another echoed her sentiments, saying, “Cutting ties with someone who causes you harm doesn’t make you ungrateful; it’s a necessary step for your well-being.”

The daughter grapples with the idea of breaking contact, torn between love and the pain of her past. It’s a heavy choice, filled with emotional complexity and a fear of being seen as ungrateful for years of financial support. Yet, as her arguments with her mother escalate, she knows she must prioritize her own mental health.

As she read through the supportive comments, she felt a glimmer of encouragement. However, the thought of severing ties with her mother leaves her feeling conflicted. Is wanting space from a toxic relationship truly selfish, or is it essential for her survival as she navigates adulthood?
