A woman shared her frustrations on Reddit after years of financial support for her parents culminated in an unexpected request for just $14 to buy a sandwich. Her story, packed with escalating demands, highlights a troubling dynamic between adult children and their parents.

The woman, 29 and currently not employed, revealed that her husband has been the primary financial supporter of her family. Over the years, the couple has given her parents more than $23,000, primarily to cover essential expenses like property taxes. Both of her parents are currently out of work, with her father relying on disability checks.
Back in 2018, her parents faced a dire situation when they were unable to pay their property taxes on the family home. They waited until the last minute, merely a month before a tax sale, to seek help. At that point, her husband took out an $8,000 loan to assist them. Although they later managed to get back on their feet financially, they never returned the money.
The financial strain resurfaced in 2024 when her parents again struggled to pay property taxes, this time amounting to $12,000. Reluctantly, the couple contributed $10,000 to prevent the loss of their home. The woman mentioned that despite her substantial support, her mother then requested that she pay the entire amount. She refused and noted that her uncle stepped in to cover the remaining $2,000. Yet, the demands did not cease. Shortly thereafter, her mother asked her to pay for an overdue electricity bill of $1,200.
Despite feeling overwhelmed and financially drained, the woman set boundaries. She explained to her mother that she could no longer continue providing financial help without risking her own finances. Initially, her mother agreed not to ask for anything else, expressing a desire not to be a burden. However, the situation quickly escalated again during a recent visit to her family for her brother’s graduation.
While back in town, the requests for small amounts of money resumed. The woman recounted how her mother texted asking for $14 to buy a subway sandwich. When the woman replied that she could not spare the money, her mother reacted by “disliking” the text message, showing disappointment in her daughter’s refusal.
Following up the sandwich request, her mother asked for another $2, reinforcing the ongoing cycle of demands. The woman expressed her exhaustion with the situation, stating, “I’m so tired.” She feels caught in an unsustainable pattern, where her parents continue to reach out for help despite her previous assistance.
One reader remarked on the story, pointing out that the daughter’s generosity appears to be taken for granted. They noted that setting boundaries is essential when it comes to family but can often be difficult to enforce. Another reader emphasized that such situations can strain relationships and suggested that the daughter needs to prioritize her own financial health.
The woman’s experience raises fundamental questions about financial responsibility and the expectations that can develop between parents and their children. It underscores how the balance of support can shift and lead to resentment if not managed with clear communication and mutual respect.
As of now, the daughter is left grappling with how to handle her parents’ continual demands while protecting her own financial stability. The hopes of gaining independence from their requests seems to be futile with her parents not recognizing the strain they place on her.
