A condo resident’s attempt to contribute to a community patio project turned contentious when her $40 offer for new lights spiraled into a $900 proposal. The situation escalated when the resident discovered her name attached to a budget that included a range of additional items she never agreed to.

The neighbor, who initiated the project, initially proposed replacing the patio lights for around $200. In a group chat, she encouraged fellow residents to chip in, stating that contributions of about $30 to $40 from several people would make the lights affordable. The resident, eager to improve the common space, agreed to contribute up to $40.

However, in the days that followed, the condo board sent out an email listing supporters of the project, which included the resident’s name. Upon opening the attachment, she was shocked to find that the proposal had expanded significantly. It now encompassed not just lighting but also an outdoor rug, decorative pillows, planters, new chairs, and delivery fees, bringing the total to nearly $900.

Feeling misled, she reached out privately to the neighbor who proposed the project. She clarified that her support was only for the lights and asked if the neighbor could adjust the request or remove her name altogether. The neighbor responded that the various elements were all part of a single vision and insisted that changing the list would only cause confusion and delays.

With no resolution in sight, the resident decided to take matters into her own hands and contacted the condo board directly. She reiterated her support for the replacement of the patio lights but specified that she did not approve of the broader project or its associated costs. Her move prompted two other residents to echo her concerns, leading the condo board to request a revision of the proposal.
