Disney and Pixar’s “Cars” returns to theaters September 4, 2026, marking the film’s 20th anniversary with a nationwide re-release, according to Variety’s reporting and coverage from Bleeding Cool. Tickets are already on sale through Fandango.

The re-release lands one day ahead of “Lightning McQueen Day,” celebrated each September 5 in honor of the character’s #95 racecar number.

Key Points

  • Theatrical re-release date: September 4, 2026, distributed through Fandango
  • “Lightning McQueen Day” falls September 5, tied to the character’s #95
  • Tie-ins include Route 66 Centennial screenings at historic venues like the Tee-Pee Drive-In and Tulsa’s Circle Cinema
  • Formula 1 partnership brings a life-size Lightning McQueen and wrapped Mercedes Safety Car to the Italian Grand Prix at Monza
  • Additional activations span NASCAR’s Daytona 500, a Porsche “Sally Special” tour, museum exhibits and multiple mobile and console games

“Cars” premiered in 2006 as one of Pixar’s more divisive critical entries at the time, yet it went on to become one of the studio’s biggest merchandising engines, spawning two sequels, a spinoff franchise, a Disney California Adventure land and roughly two decades of Lightning McQueen toys occupying floor space in big-box stores. The 20th-anniversary re-release leans directly into that legacy rather than treating the film as a standalone rerun.

Classic highway road stretching toward the horizon

The Route 66 tie-in is a natural fit: the original film’s fictional town of Radiator Springs was explicitly modeled on real towns along the historic highway, and 2026 also marks the Route 66 centennial. Special screenings are set at genuine Route 66 landmarks, including the Tee-Pee Drive-In and Tulsa’s Circle Cinema, tying the film’s nostalgia for a bypassed small-town America to the real highway’s own anniversary year.

The Formula 1 crossover marks a more unusual pairing, placing an animated demolition-derby veteran alongside the sport’s real high-performance machinery. Disney is installing a life-size Lightning McQueen and a McQueen-wrapped Mercedes Safety Car at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, alongside a “Cars Collection for Formula 1” merchandise line, betting that the franchise’s crossover appeal with genuine racing fandom is strong enough to justify the presence at one of motorsport’s most storied circuits.

Beyond the racetrack tie-ins, the anniversary push extends into museums, with life-size Cars sculptures on display in England, Italy and the U.S., plus a Porsche “Sally Special” vehicle touring American cities and a presence at February’s Daytona 500. Gaming crossovers round things out across Disney Speedstorm, Disney Emoji Blitz, LEGO DUPLO and Disney Magic Kingdoms. For a movie about outrunning obsolescence, the strategy behind bringing it back is unmistakable: put McQueen everywhere at once.
