A builder in the UK has recently found himself at the center of an online storm after refusing to lower his rates or compromise on his policy of requiring full upfront payment. The situation escalated when a prospective customer accused him of being a conman and racist on social media, igniting a heated discussion in local Facebook groups.

The builder, who prefers to remain anonymous, has built a reputation over the years without any advertising. His business thrives on word-of-mouth recommendations, and he has a strict policy when it comes to payment. For the last decade, he has insisted on full payment upfront for both materials and labor. Despite the backlash he has received, he maintains his stance on not negotiating prices. According to him, he provides clients with a detailed bill for materials without any markups.
<p“It has worked well for me,” he explained. “I’ve been burned before, and this prevents me from getting into trouble with clients who change their minds or don’t pay.” His approach seems to have been successful, as demand for his services remains high.
<p“I just told him that if he wanted me to do the work, those were my rules,” the builder recalled. The tension escalated when the customer later offered to pay upfront if the price was lowered to £8,500. The builder had had enough. “I told him I didn’t want the job,” he said. “I could tell he would be trouble.”
As the builder reflects on this situation, he remains firm in his policies but must now decide whether to address the accusations directly or allow them to fade. The community response continues to unfold, leaving the builder with a lot to think about.
