A Freelance Social Media Manager Says a Client Changed Directions So Many Times That Nothing Got Posted, and Now She’s Being Pressured to Work Extra for Free

Freelancing can be a double-edged sword, especially when navigating client relationships. It’s an avenue filled with opportunities, but it also has its fair share of challenges. A recent story shared on Reddit highlights one such challenge faced by a freelance social media manager who found herself in a frustrating situation with a client.

The social media manager, who remains unnamed, initially signed a contract with a new client who paid for the first month of service upfront. However, the month’s worth of work turned out to be more chaotic than productive. Despite the client’s expectations, the social media manager found herself unable to post a single piece of content during this period.

What went wrong? According to her account, the client underwent multiple changes in direction throughout the month. Each piece of content she created was subjected to numerous rounds of revisions, sometimes requiring 3 to 4 edits before a post was finalized. The client’s shifting priorities and demands meant that the social media manager was often left in a state of confusion, unsure of what the client truly wanted.

One of the more frustrating aspects of the collaboration was the contradictions that accompanied the client’s requests. For instance, the social media manager was initially provided with a template that dictated certain colors and fonts. Yet, when it came time to use these assets, the client insisted on abandoning them in favor of something entirely different. This inconsistency made it nearly impossible for the social media manager to create coherent content that aligned with the client’s evolving vision.

The situation grew more complicated when the client expressed preferences regarding voiceovers. At first, she requested a personalized voiceover, only to later reject her own voice in favor of an AI-generated option. When the AI-generated voice did not meet her expectations, it left the social media manager scrambling to find a suitable solution that would appease her client’s ever-changing desires.

To make matters worse, the client often failed to provide necessary brand assets, such as images or logos, claiming she lacked the time to gather these materials. When the social media manager resorted to using stock images, the client deemed them too generic. Even when AI-generated visuals were introduced, they didn’t meet the client’s standards, creating a cycle of endless revisions without any actual progress being made.

After a month of this ongoing back-and-forth, the client approached the social media manager with a surprising proposal: “We didn’t post anything, so finalize the content and post for one week, then we’ll evaluate how the audience reacts and decide if we continue working together.”

This proposal, however, implied that the social media manager would have to work an additional 1–2 weeks without compensation—an effort she felt was unfair given that the lack of posting could not solely be attributed to her. She was now being pressured to produce results from content that had never been properly vetted or approved.

This predicament raises critical questions regarding professional boundaries and the expectations that come with freelance work. It illustrates the importance of clear communication and the need for both parties to be on the same page regarding project goals. After enduring the numerous changes and frustrations, the social media manager understandably felt hesitant to agree to work extra for free.

Freelancers often find themselves caught in such predicaments, where clients may not fully grasp the impact of their changing demands. Hence, it is essential for freelancers to set boundaries and communicate their needs effectively. In this case, the social media manager is seeking an outside perspective on whether she is being unreasonable in her refusal to work extra without pay.

As freelancers navigate the complexities of client relationships, stories like this serve as a reminder of the vital role that clear communication, expectation management, and mutual respect play in fostering a successful partnership. It’s crucial for both clients and freelancers to recognize the importance of establishing a coherent workflow to avoid situations that lead to frustration on both sides.
