For months, she had been telling her husband the same thing: if she ever found the vintage vanity she had in mind, she was buying it on the spot, no discussion. Then, on an antique store crawl through a friend’s hometown, @taylorrandsoph walked into a shop and there it was. “I cannot believe I just got that,” her caption reads. Getting it home, though, came with a surprise about the price tag and a race to make it fit.

The day started as a long-planned outing with her friend Devin, who had promised to show her the best antique stores in her hometown. “We’ve been talking about this for a month,” she says. “So excited. It’s finally happening.”
The first stop was already a success. The two friends spotted a pair of tall, trophy-like pieces they both loved. They were “kind of pricey,” so they decided to split the pair and each take one home. A few small treasures and candles later, they headed to the next shop.
The Vanity She Had Been Waiting For
This was the store she had been looking forward to most. “I think this is one of the best days of my life,” she says. She explains that on the drive over, she had said out loud that if she found the vanity she was looking for, she was buying it. And then, almost as soon as they walked in, she found it.
There was just one complication. “I actually just got told that the price that I thought was just for the vanity also comes with this chair and the bed,” she says. The full set was more than she could take. “We definitely won’t have room for that, and I don’t need those other pieces.”
So the shop got on the phone to see whether she could buy the vanity alone, which, as she points out, would make it “so much cheaper.” While she waited, nerves and all, she measured the vanity against her car. The only way it was going to fit was if they took part of it off.
Help was already on the way. Her husband pulled up with his trunk open and ready, and she reminds the camera that he had been hearing about this exact piece for months. “Here we go. It’s happening,” she says as they load it up.
By the end of the day, she was calling it one of the best finds she has ever made. “This was like the best success ever,” she tells Devin. “Thanks for taking me.”

Smart Moves for Buying Big Antique Furniture
Her story highlights two things that trip up a lot of antique shoppers: pricing that covers more than you think, and getting a large piece home. A little preparation helps with both.
Ask exactly what the price includes. Bedroom suites, dining sets and vanities with matching benches are often tagged as a group. Before you fall in love, ask whether the tag covers one piece or several, and whether the seller will break up the set. Many dealers would rather sell part of a set than nothing at all, but they may need to check with the owner first, just like this store did.
Measure twice. Know the dimensions of your vehicle’s cargo space and the doorways, halls and stairs at home. Vanities often have mirrors that can be unscrewed or lifted off, which can make the difference between fitting and not fitting. Ask the staff to help, and keep any screws or brackets in a labeled bag.
Protect any mirror glass. Wrap it separately in blankets and stand it on its edge rather than laying it flat with weight on top. Old mirrors can be fragile, and the silvered backing scratches easily. Once it is damaged, it cannot simply be touched up, so a few extra minutes of padding are well worth it.
Check the drawers and joints. Pull every drawer out. Dovetail joints at the corners, smooth-sliding runners and solid wood bottoms are all good signs. Gently rock the piece to see if it wobbles, and look for lifting veneer on the top and sides.
Ask about holds and delivery. If your car is too small, many antique shops will hold a paid item for a few days, and some can recommend local delivery help. Find out before you pay.
Plan Your Own Antique Store Crawl
Going with a friend, as she did, makes the day more fun and more productive. A local friend often knows which shops are worth the stop and which owners are open to a friendly offer. Map out a route ahead of time, check store hours, since many small shops close early or skip certain weekdays, and start with the store you are most excited about while you still have energy and trunk space.
Pack moving blankets, a few bungee cords, a tape measure, a small screwdriver and water. Bring cash, too, since some dealers will knock a little off for it.
Most of all, keep your wish list in mind. When you have been dreaming about a piece for months, you will recognize it the moment you see it, and you will be ready to say yes.
