Why Roku Wanted It

Brian Tannenbaum, Roku’s head of Roku Originals, framed the reunion as more than nostalgia programming, saying in comments reported by Deadline: “Laguna Beach wasn’t just a television series; it defined a generation of pop culture and paved the way for the reality genre.” Series creator Liz Gateley added, in the same report, “When I first pitched the show to my bosses at MTV, never in a million years did I think we would find such a perfect group of real friends.”

Laguna Beach is widely credited as one of the shows that helped establish the structured-reality format later used across the genre — including its own direct spinoff, The Hills, which followed Conrad to Los Angeles starting in 2006. Two decades on, simply getting the original cast back in one room is the whole headline.
