A used Gucci Padlock bag is having a bigger moment on eBay than almost anything new hitting stores this season. Watchlist activity for the style is up 530% year over year, according to eBay’s own Watchlist Trend Report, and it’s not an outlier — it’s the pattern defining resale right now.
What eBay’s own data actually shows
eBay’s report, pulled from a platform of 136 million active buyers and roughly 2.5 billion live listings, tracks what people are searching for and saving, not just what’s selling — and luxury handbags and jewelry are eating the category. Beyond the Padlock bag’s surge, the independent breakdown from nss magazine found the Gucci Giglio bag up 428%, the Saint Laurent Y Tote up 253%, and the Bottega Veneta Arco Tote up 177% in the same window. On the jewelry side, watches are climbing too — searches for the Patek Philippe Nautilus, one of the most recognizable luxury sport watches ever made, are up 154%.
The growth isn’t confined to a handful of hero pieces, either. Women’s handbag listings on the platform grew nearly 20% globally in the first quarter, according to nss magazine’s reporting on the data, meaning supply is scaling right alongside demand rather than lagging behind it — a sign this isn’t a temporary spike caused by scarcity.
Resale isn’t following fashion anymore — it’s setting the pace
Brie Welch, eBay’s resident stylist, put the shift plainly in the company’s own report: “Resale is no longer orbiting the fashion cycle, but embedded within it, moving at the same speed, and at times, even setting the pace.” That’s a meaningful claim from the platform itself, and the numbers back it up — eBay’s fashion gross merchandise value accelerated through the first quarter of 2026 with double-digit growth across categories, per the company’s own figures.
Even brand-level searches are spiking in ways that mirror real-time culture rather than slow seasonal trends. Some houses posted eye-popping year-over-year jumps in resale interest — Rodarte climbed 721% and Raf Simons rose 384%, according to eBay’s own report — showing that secondhand shoppers are chasing specific design moments with the same urgency once reserved for new runway drops.
Why handbags and jewelry, specifically
Handbags and fine jewelry hold a structural advantage that a lot of resale categories don’t: they’re built to outlast trend cycles physically, not just aesthetically. A well-kept leather bag or a mechanical watch doesn’t degrade the way fast fashion does, which makes decades-old pieces genuinely functional rather than purely decorative — a real factor in why searches for archival Gucci and vintage Patek pieces keep climbing instead of plateauing.
That durability is exactly what’s turning eBay’s watchlist into a genuine leading indicator instead of a lagging one. Shoppers aren’t waiting for a piece to go out of production and become rare before they start hunting for it — they’re watching, saving and bidding on bags and jewelry the moment a design resurfaces in culture, which means the company that used to be known mostly for auctioning off collectibles is now, by its own numbers, one of the more reliable places to watch what luxury fashion actually wants next.
