The January sale wasn’t for a finished computer, it was for something even rarer: the “Celebration” Board, described by RR Auction’s own lot listing as the earliest known fiberglass Apple-1 prototype. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak used this exact board to validate the Apple-1’s design before it ever went into commercial production, meaning it represents the first corrected PCB layout that would go on to become the 50 machines sold through Paul Terrell’s Byte Shop, the sale that effectively launched Apple as a company. The board sold with a period KeyTronic keyboard, a power supply, and a Sony CRT television, and it shattered a previous auction record of $945,000, according to Tom’s Hardware.

The Neumark Apple-1, named for a past owner, comes from a different chapter of the same story. It’s one of Apple’s second batch of fifty machines, built and sold internationally in 1977, housed in a modified Smith-Corona typewriter case rather than the wooden enclosures more commonly associated with early Apple-1 units. According to RR Auction’s own listing, the machine was restored to full working condition in June 2026, meaning a buyer isn’t just acquiring a historical artifact, they’re acquiring one of a shrinking number of Apple-1s that can still actually boot up and run, exactly as it did in a Byte Shop customer’s home nearly five decades ago.
Two Sales, One Widening Market
These weren’t isolated events. Both sales happened within RR Auction’s ongoing “Steve Jobs & the Computer Revolution” series, marking Apple’s 50th anniversary, and the same August 2026 sale that moved the Neumark machine also included a Steve Jobs-signed Apple business card that fetched $156,658 and Jobs’s own 1976 check for Apple-1 production, which sold for $53,594, according to Auction Report’s coverage of the results. Vintage computing has clearly moved well past a niche hobbyist market. It’s now a category where a single company can run repeated eight-figure sale cycles and keep setting fresh records within the same calendar year.
A Fifty-Year-Old Machine That Still Boots Up
There’s a real technical distinction worth appreciating here too. Most fifty-year-old consumer electronics simply don’t function anymore, capacitors dry out, connections corrode, and components fail in ways that make full restoration difficult or impossible.
