A woman in Chicago returned home late at night from a movie with her boyfriend, only to find an unsettling surprise awaiting her in her gated lot. Upon entering her basement apartment, she and her boyfriend heard a knock at the back door. After checking, her boyfriend reported nothing unusual, leaving them both feeling a little on edge.
“As I sat in the living room watching television, I thought little of it,” she recounted. But her unease grew when her boyfriend went to investigate the knock again and didn’t come back immediately. Concerned, she grabbed her pepper spray and keys, peeking out the window but seeing nothing alarming. When she exited her apartment, she noticed her neighbor smoking outside, also oblivious to any danger.
“Then he texted me, telling me to go inside because it wasn’t safe,” she said. Panic set in as she tried to locate him. He soon returned, revealing the reason for his delay. A homeless man had been lurking in the alley by her bedroom window, staring directly into her home.
“The man simply left, but my boyfriend trailed him for a while before losing track in the maze of alleyways,” she said. Left shaken, she decided to call the police after no officers had arrived yet. “I felt like I needed to take action; the situation was bizarre and unnerving,” she explained.
Ultimately, she is left grappling with the choice of reporting her experience or simply moving on, still haunted by the thought of a stranger watching her in her own home.
