A young man reflects on a complicated childhood shaped by two fathers, each playing a distinct role in his life. One father, whom he refers to as his biological dad, was largely absent after his divorce from the boy’s mother. The other, whom he calls Chris, was a constant presence, driving over 200 kilometers every weekend to spend time with him and his brother.

The boy’s memories of Chris are filled with warmth and joy. Chris’s weekends were filled with stories from his childhood, visits to the zoo, and long gaming sessions. The boy recalls the Nintendo Wii filled with games like Mario Party and Donkey Kong, treasures that Chris made available despite their costs. The simple joys of childhood were abundant during these weekends, offering a stark contrast to the emotional turmoil that unfolded in his family life.

As he grew older, he grappled with the implications of having two fathers. One day, he innocently mentioned to both men that he had two dads. This revelation left them visibly upset, though he did not understand the significance of his words at the time. It wasn’t until years later, when he stumbled across divorce papers, that he began to grasp the complexities of the relationships around him.

As the boy turned 12, his life took a sudden turn when his mother initiated a divorce from his biological dad. The circumstances surrounding the divorce remained muddled in his memory, but he knew it would change everything. His biological dad moved far away to start anew, leaving the boy with a deep void that would haunt him for years.

In the years that followed, financial struggles became a recurring theme. His mother often reached out to both fathers for money, using her children as leverage. The boy acknowledged his love for his mother but began to understand the manipulations she wielded over him and his relationships with both fathers.

Despite this, his feelings for Chris remained strong. He later learned that Chris had moved on, starting another family after their tumultuous relationship. The revelation complicated his emotions further. He felt both anger and sadness, but also a sense of acceptance. He stayed in touch with Chris, sharing updates and photos once a year, and cherished Chris’s ongoing declaration that the boy would always be his kid, regardless of the distance.

His biological dad, who he referred to formally as “Mr. Dad,” was a successful military man with a doctorate and several other children. The boy often felt like an outsider in this family, burdened by the stark contrast between his achievements and those of his half-siblings. He recognized that his mother had instilled in him a sense of animosity towards Mr. Dad, painting him as the villain in the story of their lives. This perspective began to shift as he matured and started to see the complexity of his parents’ situations.

Through his adolescent years, feelings of inadequacy plagued him. He often felt he could not measure up to the expectations set by his biological dad or his siblings. The burden of feeling like an “extra” in his father’s family weighed heavily on him. Whenever they got together, the differences between them were painfully clear, leaving him grappling with self-doubt.

Yet, he still yearned for a closer relationship with Mr. Dad. He wanted more than conversations centered around financial support. However, their personalities clashed. Mr. Dad expressed his love through gifts and outings, sometimes in unconventional ways like taking him to bars when he turned 18. The boy’s heart ached every time he witnessed Mr. Dad’s inability to show vulnerability, which further alienated him from truly connecting with his biological father.

As his 20th birthday approached, he found himself in a place of reflection. He was a freshman in college, grappling with dreams for his future while trying to make sense of his past. The juxtaposition of his childhood memories with Chris and the emotional estrangement from Mr. Dad left him conflicted.

At this point in his life, he realized he had to confront his feelings. The nostalgia for Chris and the yearning for Mr. Dad’s approval created a tumultuous emotional landscape. He worked to reconcile these feelings, acknowledging the manipulation he had faced while grappling with his own self-worth.

As he navigated his studies, plans for a future career, and the road ahead, the echoes of his childhood echoed in his mind. Would he reach out to Mr. Dad more intentionally? Could he finally express the love he felt yet struggled to communicate? These thoughts lingered in his mind as he forged his path.
