A 27-year-old woman is now caught in a financial tug-of-war between her divorced parents. Her father has demanded equal financial support from her, claiming bias toward her mother, who he accuses of “leeching” off their daughter.

The woman, who has lived primarily with her mother since her parents’ divorce when she was just nine, now shoulders the household expenses. After getting a job, she decided to take care of both her and her mother’s financial needs, allowing her mother to stop working at age 55. In return, her mother handles all the household chores.

However, her father, who works part-time and is struggling financially, has not been satisfied with their arrangement. He has been pressuring his daughter for monetary assistance, insisting that she also help him out financially. He argues that he deserves some support since he claims the custody arrangement was essentially planned to benefit her mother.

The woman, however, sees things differently. She explains that her father played a minimal role in raising her. He contributed little to her education, whereas her mother fully funded her university tuition. Aside from occasional dinners, her father has not been present in her life.

Despite these differences, her father continues to demand more support. He has even suggested that she should buy him a house in their home country for his retirement. The young woman feels his demands are unreasonable, especially considering that she already provides him with cash gifts on holidays and special occasions. This year, for his birthday, she switched from cash to giving him a tea set, which she suspects triggered his latest outbursts.

His comments have begun to cause stress for her. She dreads the visits because he uses that time to lecture her about financial fairness and his perceived lack of support. “I feel very alone sometimes,” she admitted, expressing concern that his bitterness could strain their already delicate relationship. Being a part of an immigrant family, she feels the weight of the few family ties she has left and fears losing them.

Her father seems to be struggling with his own financial issues, refusing to trust banks or manage his finances wisely. He has become somewhat of a cash hoarder, wanting to keep his funds separate. This only adds to the tension between them, as he won’t let her help him with his retirement planning.

The disparity in their financial situations further complicates things. Her father, with limited retirement security, feels neglected compared to her mother, who has financial stability and investment support from their daughter. The father’s unyielding beliefs about fairness have put pressure on the daughter to play a role she does not believe she should have.

As the woman navigates this situation, she faces the difficult choice of potentially severing ties or continuing to support her father in a way that feels unjust to her. She also fears that the constant lectures could push her away entirely. The emotional toll of this conflict is evident as she reflects on her family’s dynamics and the future of her relationship with her father.

One reader empathized with her situation, saying, “It’s tough when parents can’t see their own responsibility in their child’s life. Your support for your mom makes sense given the circumstances.” Another commenter pointed out, “It sounds like your dad is projecting his financial insecurity onto you. That’s not fair.” These reactions illustrate that many understand the complexities of family relationships, especially in cases of divorce where loyalties can become strained.

The young woman stands at a crossroads, unsure of how to proceed. With her father’s increasing demands and her own financial constraints, she is left contemplating the best path forward for her own peace of mind and familial ties.
