A junior lawyer at a prominent law firm in a major city has taken matters into his own hands after being subjected to alleged misconduct by his boss. After a series of underhanded tactics, including deleting hours of his billable work, the junior counsel devised an elaborate scheme to expose his superior’s incompetence and reclaim his professional reputation.

It all started with an unremarkable assignment. The junior lawyer had submitted a detailed memo to his boss, expecting constructive feedback. Instead, he was met with harsh criticism. “This opinion is shit,” his boss told him bluntly. Despite having followed the initial instructions, the boss claimed it was not what he asked for, demonstrating a clear lack of understanding of the law and poor communication skills. This was just one of many grievances the junior lawyer had against his superior, who seemed more intent on taking credit for work than actually doing it.

Feeling cornered and frustrated, the junior lawyer decided to take a stand. He had observed his boss delete his work before, and he suspected a similar fate awaited his latest memo. His frustrations were compounded by the firm’s culture, which seemed to overlook such unethical behavior. Even when he reported his issues to a partner, he received little sympathy. “You’ll just have to work harder, or smarter,” was the partner’s dismissive advice.

With Christmas approaching, the junior lawyer concocted a plan to turn the tables. On December 24th, he forged a memo using the distinctive format of a senior partner, assigning his boss a challenging legal research task. Knowing that the partner would be unavailable for verification during the holidays, he crafted an urgent assignment that his boss could not easily question. Just like that, a trap was set.

When the boss handed the memo back to the junior lawyer, he insisted that the assignment needed to be completed immediately, completely unaware of the trap that had been laid. The junior lawyer feigned resistance, claiming he would be away for the holidays. However, with a background in admiralty law and access to previously completed research, he was able to create a comprehensive report with minimal effort. While the boss assumed he was ruining the junior’s vacation, the latter spent the holidays casually preparing for the fallout.

As the holidays ended, the junior lawyer returned to the office with the lengthy memo in hand. He presented it to his boss, who seemed pleased with the substantial work. Yet, this feeling of triumph was short-lived. A commotion soon erupted in the office, signaling trouble for the boss. Moments later, the senior partner called for him, furious about the incompetently constructed memo.

The junior lawyer watched as his boss was berated for wasting his time and the firm’s resources. The partner was incensed by the misappropriation of more than 100 purported research hours, which had been spent on a task that turned out to be little more than a prank. The junior lawyer’s strategy had succeeded, and the chaos that ensued provided him immense satisfaction.

After the confrontation, the partner turned to the junior lawyer. “Did you write this fucking memo?” he demanded, clearly recognizing the quality of the forgotten work. When the junior lawyer confirmed authorship, the partner instructed him not only to send copies of future memos but also to ensure his contributions were acknowledged. Meanwhile, his boss’s authority had been significantly undermined, and he ceased deleting the junior lawyer’s contributions to the docket.

The outcome had unexpected benefits. Not only did the junior lawyer avoid blame, but he also received a belated Christmas bonus for his efforts. He had turned the tables in a cutthroat environment and gained protection for his work while putting his boss in a precarious position.

While he still faced challenges in his workplace, the experience of “The Case of the Forged Memo” became a source of amusement for him. Reflecting on that moment of triumph gave him the confidence he needed to navigate the legal world, even if it remained frustrating at times. The tale stands as a reminder of the lengths to which one might go to reclaim professional integrity in an environment that often rewards deceit.
