The tenant, who had lived in the high-rise for over a decade, described her landlord as mostly absent and indifferent. Despite living next door, he had established a hands-off approach. As long as the rent was paid, he was presented as an easy landlord to deal with. However, cracks in their relationship began to show when the landlord’s wife decided she wanted to convert their residential unit into office space, which was illegal. Faced with eviction, the tenant agreed to move out a month early, expecting to receive a fair refund of her rent and deposit.

After the tenant went through the trouble of repairing leather on the dining table and patching walls, the landlord still offered her a pittance. Upset yet determined to reclaim her money, the tenant reluctantly accepted the 5 RMB. But she wasn’t ready to stay silent. Confiding her frustrations to an older neighbor, the story of the landlord’s deceit began to spread through the building like wildfire.

As the news of the landlord’s downfall spread, residents began to feel empowered, rallying against the long-time problem. The building that once held whispers of discontent turned into a community that demanded accountability. The landlord, alongside his wife, found themselves in the eye of a storm they could not escape—reputation damaged, relationships strained, and financially worse off.

It became a cautionary tale among the tenants, illustrating how one person’s greed can unravel a life built on lies and deceit. The tenant reflected on her journey, from being a victim of her landlord’s tricks to playing a key role in exposing the extent of his negligence.
