A former content creator for a university has shared an unusual tale of revenge after being fired from his job, managing not only to secure a year’s worth of salary but also leading to the dismissal of his former manager.

The individual, who worked at the university during the early 2010s, was brought on board to create video content for a new YouTube branding initiative. Given the era’s limitations in technology and video editing, he faced an unreasonable expectation of producing 85 videos within a year, all while managing the entire process alone. His frustrations began early as the university provided outdated equipment and insufficient resources.
His difficulties intensified when his manager’s attitude soured after learning he was a smoker. What had started as a supportive relationship quickly turned into a series of nitpicking complaints. As he continued to work long hours under harsh scrutiny, the situation became untenable. After five months of hard work, during which he had created 30 videos that garnered impressive views, he was summoned to meet with the director.
In the meeting, he learned that he was being let go because he hadn’t met the KPI of 85 videos, despite the quality of his work being praised. The director, in support of his manager, suggested they would find a more professional production house to complete the project. This moment sparked an idea within him.
Using his knowledge of the industry, he decided to assist a friend who worked as a junior director at a production house. He manipulated the database of production contacts by altering all information except for the one entry that led to his friend. After discussing a plan, he offered the production house a step-by-step guide on how to pitch their services to the university.
Within days, his friend’s production house was invited to pitch for the job. Thanks to the insider knowledge he provided, they managed to impress the university’s staff and soon secured the contract. This production house had the resources to churn out videos quickly, completing around 50 in just four months. In turn, he received a finder’s fee of 15% of the contract, totaling the equivalent of 15 months of his former salary.
As he celebrated this unexpected windfall while on holiday in Bali, he received another call from a colleague. It turned out that his former manager had been fired, and the director faced serious consequences for approving an overspending project that exceeded the original budget by a staggering ten times. The university’s Chancellor was not pleased with how finances were managed and held those in charge accountable.
This twist of fate not only benefited him financially but also gave his friend a significant career boost by promoting him to director. The once furious tension in their office became a source of ironic satisfaction, as he successfully navigated a complex situation to his advantage after being unfairly dismissed.
One person commented on his story, “Sometimes you just have to play the game your own way when the odds are stacked against you.” Another reader noted, “It’s a wild way to turn things around, but I can see why you’d want to.”
The former employee now considers whether he should formally report the actions of his previous employer or simply let the incident rest. After all, he has already walked away with a year’s salary and helped his friend leap forward in his career.
