A grocery store loading bay became the unlikely setting for a showdown between a store employee and a local woman in a red convertible. This encounter, which escalated over parking violations, ended with the woman’s car perched on pallets and an employee left with a bruised foot.

The narrator, who worked as a night receiver at a grocery store on an island, was responsible for unloading the most crucial delivery of the day. The job required precision, especially during the busy summer months when wealthy vacationers descended on the island. To keep the loading bay clear, he set out three-foot cones every day before the truck arrived. However, this precaution often went ignored by some island visitors.
On one fateful day, a woman driving a red convertible decided to push aside one of the cones and park directly in the loading bay. The employee rushed outside to confront her, but she dismissed his request with a claim that she knew the store owner, Danny, and had his permission to park there. Knowing Danny well himself, the narrator was aware that she was lying.
After repeated attempts to reason with the woman, he instructed the cashiers to prevent her from checking out until she moved her car. Eventually, she stormed out of the store and relocated her vehicle—barely moving it far enough to allow the delivery truck access.
The next morning, Danny asked the narrator about the incident. When he heard her side of the story, he clarified that she had no permission to park there. Though Danny asked the employee not to tow her car, he did suggest a more creative solution: “Why not pull her e-brake and let’s push it out of the way?” A week later, when the woman parked in the loading bay again, she flipped the employee off as he pointed out the cones.
Frustrated but determined, the employee rounded up some coworkers and decided to take action. After releasing the handbrake on her convertible, they pushed her car across the parking lot, effectively blocking it in while the grocery truck unloaded. For thirty minutes, her car remained immobile, and she couldn’t get to it.
As the employee unloaded pallets, one of them nearly rolled over the woman when she unexpectedly walked into the loading bay. In a split-second decision, he jammed his foot under the pallet jack to stop it from hitting her. The weight of the pallet caused a severe bruise on his foot, leaving him in pain and prompting him to yell at her to get out of the loading zone. Surprisingly, she complied and fled the area.
Later that day, Danny called the employee into his office after receiving a complaint from the woman about his outburst. The employee explained that he had not cursed at her, and instead directed him to the security footage. Once Danny reviewed the tape, he saw the woman’s inappropriate parking, her disrespectful gesture, and the employee’s desperate attempt to prevent harm to her.
As Danny examined the footage, he also noticed the employee’s injured foot. Recognizing the serious nature of the situation, he told the employee that the next time the woman parked in the loading bay, he should immediately call a tow truck. He acknowledged that the employee could have sustained a more severe injury due to her negligence.
However, the saga did not end there. The following week, the woman once again parked irresponsibly, this time in front of the dumpster, blocking access to the loading bay. The employee, now fed up, decided to take action. He called a tow truck to have her vehicle removed, but they were tied up. So, with the help of a produce clerk, he devised a cunning plan.
This time, instead of pushing the car, they lifted it on pallets. The employee placed a pallet under the convertible and used a pallet jack to hoist it up, eventually stacking it on top of another two pallets. The tires weren’t even touching the ground, leaving her car suspended awkwardly. Satisfied with his handiwork, the employee informed the tow truck where to find the car once they were available.
Though the woman didn’t storm into the store like before, her outraged screams were loud enough to alert the managers. Danny arrived at the scene and quickly sided with the employee, banning the woman from the store altogether. This time, she wasn’t as close with Danny as she thought.
Despite the chaos, the employee received a small raise from Danny afterwards, solidifying his support. It was clear that the red convertible lady had crossed a line, and the grocery store now had one less persistent parking violator to deal with.
