An engineering student is at the center of a financial feud after a trip to Spain left him maxed out on credit cards and feeling betrayed by a friend and his family. The 20-year-old, who is self-sufficient and manages his own expenses for college, took significant measures to save up for the trip. He worked three jobs while juggling a demanding course load to afford his dream vacation with his best friend.

The saga began last year when the student, known as mercurymlan06 on Reddit, planned an international journey that included both Ireland and Spain. For the Ireland leg, he contributed his own funds, covering his flight, accommodation, and even food while his friend’s family picked up some attraction tickets. The arrangement seemed fair, with both parties sharing costs amicably.

However, the situation took a turn during the trip to Spain. According to the student, he incurred an unexpected financial burden when his friend claimed a “fraudulent charge” on his card. Trusting his friend, he ended up maxing out his credit cards twice, totaling around $1,500 in expenses that he was promised would be reimbursed once they returned to the United States.

After returning home, the student faced a significant financial crunch. With only $150 left, he needed funds for his apartment’s security deposit, car repairs, and food. But when he approached his friend for repayment, he was met with excuses. His friend, who had never worked and relied on his parents for support, insisted that he would need to wait for the money.

Determined to resolve the issue, the student meticulously created an itemized list of expenses from both trips, showing that any debts owed were minimal. He realized he owed the friend’s family only $7 after accounting for the costs they incurred while he was with them. He had also invested time and resources into helping the family beyond the trips, which made the lack of repayment feel even more frustrating.

Amidst the back-and-forth that followed, the student’s requests for repayment led to confrontation. His friend’s mother accused him of being dishonest, labeling him as a “liar” and “selfish,” despite his careful documentation of the expenses. This confrontation escalated when it became clear that while he was struggling to pay bills, the family was purchasing a new Mustang for his friend. The perception of inequality was not lost on the student, adding to his frustrations.

The tension reached a boiling point when the mother began ghosting him and attempted to delay addressing the repayment. She pushed back discussions, causing the student to feel increasingly taken advantage of. After involving his own father in the conflict, the mother still refused to acknowledge any financial wrongdoing on their part.

As the situation continued to spiral, the student stated that he felt guilty about the prospect of taking legal action but saw no other option if he did not receive payment by the set deadline. He contemplated drafting a demand letter and possibly pursuing small claims court, reflecting on his feelings of betrayal and frustration.

During the trips, the student also faced personal attacks from his friend, who made derogatory comments about his appearance and questioned his morals due to differences in religious beliefs. This added a layer of emotional distress to an already challenging financial situation, making it hard for him to reconcile the friendship.

Responses to his story on Reddit revealed a mix of empathy and support for his decision to seek repayment. One person told him, “You owe it to yourself to stand up for what is right.” Another reader emphasized the importance of financial accountability, saying, “You worked hard for that money. Don’t let anyone take advantage of you.” The overall sentiment among those reacting favored the idea of standing firm against what many viewed as a clear case of exploitation.

With the deadline looming, the engineering student is left weighing the consequences of pursuing legal action against a family he once considered close. As he faces the choice of how to respond amid feelings of betrayal and disappointment, one thing remains clear: the friendship is now deeply strained as he contemplates his next move.
