A Minnesota homeowner is facing an increasingly bizarre situation with his new neighbor, who has begun vandalizing a fence that the homeowner installed on his property line. The homeowner, who posted his dilemma on Reddit under the name u/StupidFenceThrowaway, shared the troubling sequence of events that began after he constructed a six-foot cedar privacy fence to enclose his backyard.

The homeowner’s fence was built in May following a professional survey that marked the property line. However, things took a turn when his neighbor, who had just moved in recently, claimed that the side of the fence facing their yard belonged to them. This assertion led to a series of unwanted interactions that would escalate over time.

While driving home one day, the homeowner was shocked to find that his neighbors had painted all over his fence. The artistic display wasn’t a simple coat of paint but a chaotic mix of colors and random images, courtesy of the neighbor’s children. Upset over this apparent vandalism, he attempted to address the issue directly with his neighbor.

When the homeowner approached the neighbor, he was met with hostility. The husband answered the door inappropriately dressed, displaying a confrontational attitude. Despite the homeowner’s attempt to communicate his concerns, the neighbor erupted in a defensive rant, claiming that since the fence was on the property line, the side facing them was theirs to modify as they pleased. The interaction grew even more tumultuous when the neighbor’s wife, intoxicated, joined the fray.

After this initial encounter, the homeowner contemplated letting it go, reasoning that it was just paint. However, the situation worsened as the neighbor’s children began using the fence not only for artistic expression but also for physical activities like throwing knives and shooting airsoft targets. The damage was no longer limited to paint; it was becoming evident that this misuse would shorten the lifespan of the fence significantly.

In response to the escalating vandalism, the homeowner found himself questioning the legal standing regarding the fence. He was torn about whether to file a police report for property damage. He also wondered how much legal recourse he had regarding video surveillance, unsure about privacy laws when putting up cameras that might intrude into his neighbor’s yard.

As the homeowner sought advice from the Reddit community, responses pointed out the nuances of property and fence law in Minnesota. Some users highlighted that while property lines are crucial, disputes over shared fences often lead to complex and ongoing tensions between neighbors. One user emphasized that, while the police might not get involved in such civil matters, consulting a real estate attorney could offer clarity on financial responsibilities related to the fence’s maintenance.

Another user pointed out Minnesota’s unique laws regarding fences, which include a designated “Fence Viewer” to manage disputes. This information did not provide immediate reassurance to the homeowner, who feared that any legal action might worsen relations with his neighbors, leading to a drawn-out conflict.

With frustration mounting and little resolution in sight, the homeowner sought advice from a local fence company. After consulting them, he learned that the fence had actually been installed slightly on his side of the property line, contrary to his initial belief that it was perfectly aligned. This meant he had stronger grounds to assert ownership over the fence than he had previously thought.

Taking action, he filed a police report for the damage caused, which included painting and physical alterations made to the fence. He also communicated to his neighbor that he would pursue small claims court if necessary. This confrontation led to a surprising response from the neighbor’s wife, who, when sober, expressed regret about the situation.

Interestingly, the homeowner recounted an unexpected apology from the neighbor’s teenage son, who admitted to having misunderstood the situation and even offered money for the damages. The homeowner decided against accepting the boy’s money, opting instead to encourage him to save for a gaming console by offering yard work opportunities in the future.

Now, months later, the relationship with the neighbor seems to have reached a fragile peace. The homeowner has had no further incidents, and there is hope that they can coexist without further disruption. Yet, the entire experience serves as a reminder of how quickly neighborhood relationships can sour over property disputes, leaving the homeowner—like many facing similar issues—wondering about the best course of action in maintaining peace.
