When a young man in his late teens took a job in the Canadian oil patch, he was greeted with the usual excitement that comes from landing your first real gig. However, excitement quickly turned into a battle against an alcoholic bully who seemed determined to make his life miserable. This is the story of how one man’s theatrics turned the tables on his tormentor in the most dramatic way possible.

The author, an 18-year-old at the time, enjoyed his new role in well testing, a position that paid far more than minimum wage at the time. But instead of working alongside a seasoned professional, he found himself paired with Gary, a lazy, boozing supervisor in his mid-50s. The job involved a lot of hard work, but Gary was more interested in napping and watching DVDs than supporting his young partner.

For the next three months, the author endured relentless bullying from Gary, who would often insult him with lines like, “Didn’t your dad teach you anything?” It didn’t help the young man’s self-esteem, especially since he had a complicated relationship with his father. And when Gary discovered this, he took full advantage, making cruel remarks that left the young employee feeling small and powerless.

As the days passed, the situation grew worse. Gary would demand that the author drive his truck to work each day, claiming he was hungover and needed to rest. This meant that the author not only had to deal with the bullying, but also the added pressure of being responsible for their safety every morning while Gary slept off his whiskey-laden nights.

It was one night during dinner, after another barrage of insults, that the young man snapped. Fed up with Gary’s abuse and tired of being treated like a doormat, he decided to take action. But instead of plotting traditional revenge, he came up with a plan that involved a combination of creativity, drama, and a drawn-out performance that would leave Gary shaken.

Early the next morning, while driving Gary’s truck to work, the author spotted a semi-truck parked on the side of the highway. Seizing the opportunity, he approached the truck driver under the guise of needing help. With a plan in mind, he convinced the trucker to participate in a staged confrontation. The semi-truck would act as the formidable adversary in this comical yet high-stakes scenario.

With the trucker positioned and Gary blissfully unaware in the passenger seat, the author maneuvered the truck until it was almost bumper-to-bumper with the other vehicle. Then, the show began. The author honked the truck’s horn and screamed, “We’re gonna die!” as the truck driver blasted his airhorn. The scene was set for a meltdown of epic proportions.

As the shock set in, Gary jolted awake like a jack-in-the-box, his expression morphing from confusion to horror as the absurdity of the situation unfolded. The sudden chaos sent Gary’s heart racing and his emotions into a frenzy. In that moment, the author reveled in the irony of the situation—the bully had become the one under threat.

After Gary’s initial panic subsided, he began spewing threats, all the while trying to grasp what had just happened. The author continued to laugh, relishing the transformation of power dynamics; it was the bully feeling terror for a change. The drive to the worksite was filled with Gary’s rants and the author’s uncontrollable laughter, a stark contrast to their usual grim commute.

Upon arriving at the site, Gary’s anger escalated, and he threatened to fire the author. But rather than feeling fear or remorse, the young man felt a sense of victory. It turned out that the company’s owner had more sense than to involve the police over the incident, which left Gary’s dramatic storytelling in check.

What started as a miserable job ended with not only a hilarious story but also a sense of freedom as the author was reassigned to a different crew. The experience not only provided him with street cred among his peers but also showcased the power of creativity in overcoming adversity. In this case, it was not love that conquered all, but rather a brilliant performance that turned the tables on a tyrant.
